{"id":719,"date":"2012-02-19T13:18:47","date_gmt":"2012-02-19T18:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ashleyit.com\/blogs\/brentashley\/?p=719"},"modified":"2012-02-19T13:27:20","modified_gmt":"2012-02-19T18:27:20","slug":"the-pod-bay-doors-are-closing-dave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ashleyit.com\/blogs\/brentashley\/2012\/02\/19\/the-pod-bay-doors-are-closing-dave\/","title":{"rendered":"The pod bay doors are closing, Dave."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was just reading about how OSX Mountain Lion is by default <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2012\/02\/16\/os-x-mountain-lion-limits-apps-to-mac-app-store-signed-apps-by-default\/\">restricting app downloads to the App Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How long before the &#8220;anywhere&#8221; option disappears?<\/p>\n<p>How long before you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/technology\/la-fi-tn-apple-macs-that-wont-get-os-x-mountain-lion-20120216,0,356802.story\">can&#8217;t avoid upgrading<\/a> to Mountain Lion or its successors?<\/p>\n<p>Apple is moving further down the road I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashleyit.com\/blogs\/brentashley\/2010\/04\/12\/the-two-trajectories-of-device-convergence\/\">predicted two years ago<\/a>.  Windows 8 is experimenting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/gadgetlab\/2011\/12\/windows-8-store-introduced\">similar things<\/a>, but Microsoft doesn&#8217;t have the hardware lockin.<\/p>\n<p>I admit it&#8217;s not evidence of the app-ocalypse, but it <em>may<\/em> indicate a slow rise to a boil.  I love my Macbook Air, however I was a latecomer as a Mac fanboi, and I&#8217;ll be ready to jump back over to the Linux or BSD pots before it gets too steamy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was just reading about how OSX Mountain Lion is by default restricting app downloads to the App Store.
