{"id":255,"date":"2001-11-11T22:16:12","date_gmt":"2001-11-12T03:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ashleyit.com\/blogs\/brentashley\/?p=255"},"modified":"2001-11-11T22:16:12","modified_gmt":"2001-11-12T03:16:12","slug":"rollin-rollin-rollin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ashleyit.com\/blogs\/brentashley\/2001\/11\/11\/rollin-rollin-rollin\/","title":{"rendered":"Rollin, rollin, rollin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/interactiveu.berkeley.edu:8000\/CA\/\">Chris Ashley<\/a> (no relation &#8211; perhaps we&#8217;re &#8216;blog brothers&#8217;) muses on the fleeting fame that washes over one when their blog is linked to by someone higher in the blog popularity tree, creating a temporary surge in their viewer base. <a href=\"http:\/\/doc.weblogs.com\/\">Doc<\/a> calls it <i><b>blogrolling<\/b><\/i>, a clever term directly derived from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/cgi-bin\/dict.pl?term=logrolling\">logrolling<\/a> (political back-scratching).<\/p>\n<p>It always settles back, but a little higher than the previous norm.  I&#8217;ve seen this slingshot effect happen myself, when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scripting.com\">Dave<\/a> linked to me when I was but a blogophyte.  I&#8217;ve got many still-consistent visitors who initially came to me during that particular bulge in my logs.<\/p>\n<p>This effect begets a sort of journeyman\/apprentice mentoring scheme into which I&#8217;ve found myself naturally falling.  Not only do I like getting linked to (although, as Tim <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timmorgan.info\/mt\/archives\/000175.html\">pointed out <\/a> last month, some humility and perspective is in order), I also derive a certain satisfaction from linking to others and helping to shine a light under their bushel.
